Close to SOS-Racisme and, like SOS-Racisme, to the Socialist Party, NPNS rallied women from the banlieues around the issue of violence. It was, however, to come under heavy fire from sections of both the feminist movement and the antiracist left. Both, for different reasons, accused it of being co-opted and of having too narrow a focus (see part III). Much of the criticism was focused on NPNS president Fadéla Amara, who had been national president of La Maison des Potes since 2000. This increased following the 2007 legislative elections, when Amara, as a socialist deputy, accepted a junior ministry with the right-wing government headed by François Fillon, widely thought to be President Sarkozy’s puppet. Amara, secretary of state for town planning policy, attached to the Ministry of Housing and Town Planning, has now been written off by most of the left as an opportunistic sellout.

Also in 2002, French bookstores started displaying a range of post-9/11 books, some of which dealt with 9/11 but many of which dealt with Islam and Islamism in France or the hijab issue, or both (for example, Zouari 2002; Kaltenbach and Tribalat 2002; Laïdi and Salam 2002; Sifaoui 2002). The date of their publication is arguably in part an effect of lead time and the nature of the research which in some cases was conducted over many years, but in a number of cases it was surely planned.
